Background

Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor subfamily B member 1 (LILRB1), also known as CD85j and ILT2, is a transmembrane glycoprotein in the LILR immunoregulatory protein family. LILRB1 is an inhibitory receptor expressed by different leukocyte lineages which specifically interacts with HLA class I (HLA-I) molecules and the UL18 human cytomegalovirus glycoprotein.

The receptor is expressed on immune cells where it binds to MHC class I molecules on antigen-presenting cells and transduces a negative signal that inhibits stimulation of an immune response. It controls inflammatory responses and cytotoxicity to help focus the immune response and limit autoreactivity.
