DNA Aptamer against Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A
Background
Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) is a neurotoxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. BoNT/A is used as a therapeutic drug to treat muscle disorders, by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. This prevents the binding of acetylcholine to motor end-plate nicotinic acid receptors, which blocks muscle contraction. BoNT/A is also used to treat temporarily smooth facial wrinkles, severe underarm sweating and chronic migraine.
