Background
Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite with cosmopolitan distribution that infects the majority of warm-blooded animals. Infection in humans can cause severe ocular, neurologic, and sometimes systemic disease, especially in immunocompromised and congenitally infected individuals. Transmission of the parasite has been demonstrated in humans by the consumption of meat, vegetables,, and contaminated water. For all these reasons, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization declared toxoplasmosis a foodborne parasitic infectious disease of global concern.
